A mug cake is a great sweet treat, a good stress reliever, and a quick, low-mess dessert for one. The best thing is that there’s no mug cake season – they never go out of style! For a great alternative to a savory drink or an after-dinner treat that doesn’t take an hour, try a mug cake. They’re some of the most versatile, easy recipes, and they can cater to all kinds of dietary requirements – vegan, gluten-free, no chocolate, extra chocolate – you can make a mug cake with just about anything. Below is a sample recipe, but trying alternative ingredients or different garnishes are part of what makes baking a mug cake so great. Happy baking!

Basic Mug Cake Recipe

Here’s a staple mug cake recipe: chocolate cake.

Ingredients:

    • 1 egg

    • ¼ cup powdered sugar

    • 1 or 2 tablespoons cocoa powder

Directions:

    1. Crack the egg into your mug, then mix in the other ingredients.
    2. Once you have a consistent mixture with no clumps, microwave for 50-60 seconds, until the cake is cooked but gooey.
    3. Then top with your favorite sweets, chocolate chips, cream, or ice cream!

Switch It Up With Some Different Varieties

    • The most common kind of mug cake is chocolate, since chocolate is so widely loved. But some days, that might be a little too much, or you just want something different. That’s the beauty of a mug cake: you can do just about anything. Maybe you want a vegan peanut butter mug cake (just switch fat-free milk for almond or soy milk). Or maybe you want to try your own variations: mug cakes are as forgiving to experimental bakers as they are simple. Want to throw in some chocolate chips with your cake? Just add 10-20 more seconds to the cook time to let the chocolate melt, and you’re ready to go. You have a recipe for a simple vanilla cake, but you want something to spice it up: try adding some cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm, slightly spicy cake.

The best thing about mug cakes is that they’re so small, any changes you make are going to be obvious. Even a pinch of cinnamon will come across in the final product. There are mug cake recipes everywhere, and it’s always fun and exciting to come up with a new change you love, or just follow a tried and true recipe for a delicious mug cake. Either way, mugs definitely aren’t just for drinks anymore.
