“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” When Clark Cable, portraying Rhett Butler, uttered these words as he departed Scarlett, Vivian Leigh, in the movie, little did they know that this line would be voted the #1 movie quote by the American Film Institute.
“Damn”, today is considered a very mild curse word, but in 1939, it was a very big deal. So big in fact, that on November 1, 1939, the Production Code was changed so the movie would be in compliance. “Damn” and “hell” could only be used when it was “essential and required for portrayal, in proper historical context, of any scene or dialogue based upon historical fact or folklore … ” And to think, the line was almost changed…one of the suggestion, “I don’t give a hoot.” Thankfully it wasn’t and now 75 years later we are celebrating this timeless classic.
Also, here’s a big Mogo shout-out to Hattie McDaniel who won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Mammy, the house servant. She was the first African American to do win this award.
